The preparation for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games is making significant strides across Queensland, marked by the recent award of an $87 million contract for the Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program.
BMD Constructions has been selected to lead the first phase of early works for this transformative project. This phase will focus on the development of new and upgraded roads, alongside landscape and services infrastructure. A highlight of the project is the creation of a sub-tropical boulevard along Macarthur Avenue, featuring separated cycleways, footpaths, and lush landscaping.
Site work is set to begin this month.
“As a proud Australian contractor with 45 years of experience, BMD is excited to be part of the Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program – a project that will redefine urban connectivity and community vibrancy,” said BMD CEO Scott Power. “Having delivered crucial infrastructure upgrades within Northshore Brisbane since 2016, BMD’s experience, capability, and collaborative approach will pave the way for the Brisbane Athlete Village and beyond. Our focus is on delivering performance and leaving lasting legacies in the communities we serve, creating jobs, and working with local businesses to ensure tangible local benefits, including a diverse, inclusive, and connected workforce.”
The Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program, enabled by Economic Development Queensland, is a critical component in the development of the Brisbane Athlete Village, which will host athletes and para-athletes during the 2032 Games. Upon completion, the program will set a new benchmark for sustainability, resilience, and innovation.
At full maturity, the trees planted as part of this project are expected to provide 70 to 80 percent shade coverage of road verges, creating a sun-safe, cool environment for residents and visitors. Smart and multi-functional light poles will also be installed throughout the precinct, enhancing connectivity and security.
Post-Games, the Brisbane Athlete Village will be repurposed to provide diverse housing options, including social, affordable, hotel, retirement, and market-rate homes, alongside community, recreation, and leisure facilities.
“These early works will transform Northshore Brisbane well ahead of 2032, delivering a more connected city and creating a lasting legacy,” stated Premier Steven Miles. “Northshore will not only become home to Team Australia and athletes from around the world but will also be repurposed post-Games into much-needed housing, including social and affordable homes. This is the kind of legacy we aim to deliver for Brisbane and Queensland.”
The Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program will be delivered over six years. Upon completion, it will offer:
- Approximately four kilometres of new and upgraded road connections with signalised two-way access across Northshore.
- Improved access to Kingsford Smith Drive with new connections and signalised two-way access.
- Extensive landscaping, including around 1,000 new trees and thousands of shrubs, promoting cooler streets and encouraging walking, cycling, and e-mobility.
- Universal design principles ensuring access for all, with wider-than-standard verges for increased comfort and safety.
- Enhanced flood immunity through raised and graded roads and upgraded drainage systems.
- Separate cyclist and pedestrian facilities for major new streets.
Minister Grace Grace added, “The Northshore Brisbane Street Renewal Program is accelerating the transformation of this riverfront precinct, not only supporting the Brisbane Athlete Village but also creating a lasting legacy of urban revitalisation and economic growth for the city.”
